Jealous of the Moon -- Deconstructed

Haley asked about my take on the song Jealous of the moon I posted earlier here. Well I was going to a brief synopsis but, I thought this might be more fun. I have not done an in depth artistic analysis since college so I posted the lyrics and under each verse I am throwing out my ideas on it. (Lyrics in italics obviously, my thoughts are not.)

Trying on a brand new dress
But you haven't worn the old one yet.
You've come too far, to turn around now.
Giving up a good fight.
You're as strong as anyone.
You're back when you started from,
I see you're back where you started from.

The image of the brand new dress when you have a perfectly good one you never wore sticks with me. I think it is a metaphor for all those things you tell yourself you are going to accomplish what you are going to be. Yet, instead of sticking with it till the end you move on to the new next exciting thing never embracing what could have been. "Giving up the good fight" echoes this sentiment where you never quite push all they way through only forcing you "back were you started from"

Chorus

Drag your pretty head around
Swearing you're gonna drown with a beautiful sigh and a river of lies.

You are caught up in yourself. Doubt, depression, why can't you become what you want to become. You lie to yourself tell yourself you can never make it, that you can't make it, that your day will never come.

Chorus

Why don't you call me, I could save you.
Together we'll find a god we can pray to that will take you by the hand.

Redemption, salvation. Together with friends and God maybe. Just Maybe.

I hate to see a friend of mine,
Laughing out loud when she's crying inside,
but you've got your pride
.

More lies. Putting up fronts. Too proud, too strong, to admit you want and need more in your life and help to get there. (i.e. God and Friends in the previous line.)

Staring down the stars, jealous of the moon
You wish you could fly.
But you're staying where you are
There's nothing you could do, if you're too scared to try.

You're staring down the stars,
You stay where you are,
You're jealous of the moon, but there's nothing you could do if you're too scared to try,
If you're too scared to try.

The chorus. On a personal note the line that makes the song for me is: "There is nothing you could do, if you're too scared to try." I think the song speaks of seeing others around you successful, happy, whatever (Jealous of the Moon) looking towards your own dreams ( Staring down the stars) and realizing you will never have any of that if you don't embrace today, overcome your fears, and fight for your dreams.

In the end I think it might be about a different more specific theme. But, then again a sign of great song is that someone can take it and make it there own. That people with completely different stories and problems can hear the same words and take home what it means to them.
